May 2015 - Month of Growth

The pictures took this month is a good indicator of the kids' growth. We start with Renee's great GATE's test result putting her in the top 1%! We are all very happy that she is such a gifted kid. At the same time, we both agreed that she should have a fun childhood, so we are not thinking of any extra activities, no that she didn't have a full schedule already.

First picture is more about where Max is growing FROM. This is the first mother/son dance event. Max has ALMOST grown out of his mama's boy phase. Almost.

Renee had another dance recital.

Max is still shy in the big crowd. He is good at picking up lessons and knows what is expected of him. He just chose not to speak up most of the time.

In the back of the school, Renee and Max had fun throwing water balloon to the teachers.

Renee painted one tile that will be put in one of the walls.

This year Shifu and I prepared Max for the Kungfu tournament. After some confusion around the logistics, Max stepped in the ring and performed for the first time in his life. I am so proud of this major step!

Max performed twice, once with stick and once with the sword. So he got two cups. Shifu was also very happy and took a picture with him.

Reneen has grown to like the pop songs. Her favorite singer right now is Taylor Swift. I found this introduction of Taylor Swift book in the library. Renee was estatic.

Max enjoys putting things together. Sometimes that is done after he takes things apart. This is the most challenging toy that he has got his hands on. As the time of this blog post, he is still working on building the second model. He can get frustrated but eventually he would be willing to pick it up and try again.

We went to camping at Lake Chabot this year. This time, everyone behaved pretty well.

The next day we went to the Marina and rented the patio boat. Because the lake was pretty empty and the boat has slow speed, I was able to show Renee how to drive it. She really enjoyed it.

We took a good family picture at the boat.

Here are additional good pictures from the camping trip.

April 2015 - Spring Outdoors

We are getting ready for the summer. But spring is still here and the cool weather is great for outdoor activties.
I signed up and got to be part of Max' field trip to the zoo.
We found a good spot to take a break and had our lunch.
Besides the live animals, the boys also took interest in the fake fossil digging site.
Max is always curious about the things around him.
Renee and Max went to the city during one of the weekends.
This remains as Max' favorite place to climb around and pose for pictures.
Renees has a unique facial expression with food that she finds tasty. She does not like me pointing it out. But I did capture it here.
On the day that the water park was open, I took Max to play. It turned out to be very chilly. I think Max got a cold two days later.
We opened the gift from my brother-in-law when he came to visit. Renee and Max loved practicing here.

March 2015 - Chinese Culture

Looking at the picture, we did quite a few things specific to Chinese culture

Max continue going to the Kungfu class. Shifu said that he is making progress. But every time I see the bigger kids perform, he still has a long way to go.
The tea time has become a recurring event between father and daughter. I really hope Renee would still sit down and talk over a cup of tea when she becomes a teenager.

Quail Run school had a Chinese New year celebration. Everyone dressed up for the occasion.

I took Max to see a Kungfun tournament in Berkeley. He got bored after an hour so I found a park nearby. It turned out to be a place with a lot of history. The water feature was from early 1900s and only restored in recent years.

We discovered a Chinese cafe where you can order special shaved ice. Renee loves it.

We went to Boomers and waited in a long line for the car track. It took over an hour! Max really liked it though.

Lianxin and the kids went to visit Ashley and her mom and spent the long weekend there.

Max is in the class to learn how to perform on stage. We try to encourage him to speak up and talk louder.
